Humanity is facing multiple crises – a convergence of geopolitical tensions/conflicts, natural resource depletion, wealth disparity, economic instability, climate change, mass migration, and technological threats. Solving these interlinked problems requires the creation of trust among leaders of all nations. The need for global cooperation has never been more urgent. The time has come to discuss a new international economic framework. We must transform our ways of living entirely. Nothing less will ensure our survival amidst the looming threat of nuclear weaponry.

Perhaps the best moment in history to offer as a source of inspiration is 45 years ago when blueprints were drafted to comprehensively solve the root problems of global instability and mass human suffering.
The Brandt Commission, formed in 1977 by West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, presented world leaders and the general public with a proposal for a full-scale restructuring of our global financial institutions and other measures needed to bridge the gap between developed and developing nations.
Brandt brought together about 40 men and women from many different countries in the world, representing every shade of political opinion to do with the world’s economy. Their findings, reported in 1980 under the title “North-South: A Programme for Survival”, pointed to a set of specific concerns and objectives for achieving planetary balance. Not least among these was the need for a more equitable distribution of food supplies among the nations. This widely read report was considered by many influential figures at that time. U.S. President Ronald Reagan, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, French President François Mitterrand and other world leaders met and discussed these findings in October 1981 at the
North–South Summit in Cancun, Mexico.
The Commission stood most of all for the principle of
inclusion — of issues as well as nations. Chancellor Brandt made it clear in his own writings that the aim of global negotiations must be
international consensus. No single problem, such as energy, debt or food, should be viewed in isolation without considering its implications on the full global agenda of interconnected issues.
Now, more than ever, we must transcend partisan politics and look beyond our narrow ideologies to see that the well-being of one nation affects the well-being of all nations. Fortunately, at this critical moment, a very wise spiritual teacher named Maitreya is emerging publicly to inspire us to address these deep societal divisions and inequalities. He sees humanity as one interconnected family with the potential for rapid progress. The key, as he has emphasized many times over the years, is to implement the principle of sharing on an international level.
Over one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted across the food system, from farm to fork. Much of this loss is avoidable. Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of humans continue to live in hunger and despair. There is no need for such imbalance that inevitably leads to unrest and conflict. Earth's bounty belongs to all humans.
"Sharing is divine," Maitreya says. "When you share, you recognize God in your brother." He will propose a new way of living, for our consideration, whereby nations make over in trust their excess food and raw materials so as to create a pool of resources for the global community. Each nation could maintain an inventory of its assets and needs. These statistics will provide a United Nations agency set up for this purpose with the information required for a rational redistribution of the world’s resources. That which each country has in excess of its needs could be put aside in trust for the world.
It is
our shared humanity that must be emphasized if we are to solve the major problems around us. Mass demonstration after mass demonstration, in all corners of the globe, people are rising up and demanding their basic needs be met. The unstoppable rise of people power cannot be ignored. A new world is in the making – a world in balance, a world of goodwill, a more peaceful world brought about by global economic justice and intelligent cooperation.
Sharing and Justice, Brotherhood and Freedom are not new concepts. From the dawn of time mankind has linked his aspiration to these beckoning stars. Now, my friends, shall we anchor them in the world.
